Frequently asked questions

about our wide plank flooring, antique products and process.

Here's a few reoccurring questions we're asked. If you don't see your question, give us a call and we'll be happy to answer it for you.

What is Reclaimed Hardwood Flooring?

Reclaimed hardwood flooring is made from wood recycled from dismantled barns, granaries, factories and other turn-of-the-century buildings that have outlived their usefulness. These materials were often originally harvested from America's virgin forests, making it authentic virgin timber.

How Wide are Wide Plank Floors?

Most of our wide plank floors have widths from 3” to 11”. We’re a custom wood flooring mill, so our planks are milled to your specifications. If you need extra wide floorboards, we can mill them for you. We also offer mixed-width wood planks for when you want to incorporate a variety of widths into your hardwood floor.

What is a Random Width Floor?

A random width floor means that each floor is produced for optimal yield and the width results vary with each floor. Random width flooring is more traditional and available in a number of width ranges. Random width means there is no guarantee you will receive a specific percentage or quantity of any one width. Prior to installation of a random width floor, the installer should read over the tally sheet provided by Olde Wood Limited® which shows the quantities of each width included in the order and decide on how they will lay the floor utilizing the full amount of each width. Do not start installing the floor in a sequential pattern or you will most likely run short on one or more specific widths. If you would like to install sequentially (3,4,5,6,3,4,5,6,3,4,5,6…..) this is called an equal lineal footage floor and would need to be ordered that way with specified quantities of each width. Specified widths are available upon request. Please ask your Sales Rep for information and pricing if you would like this option.

How Long Should I Let My Wide Plank Floors Acclimate Before Installation?

Unfinished hardwoods should typically acclimate for 7 – 10 days, while prefinished hardwoods should typically acclimate 10 – 14 days. This will allow the hardwood’s moisture content to reach equilibrium with the environment in which it will be installed.

What is Traditional Plank Flooring?

Traditional Plank flooring is new hardwood that has been traditionally milled. Typically harvested from the Midwest and Appalachian states, these timbers retain the character and strength that defines this timber region. All of our Traditional flooring is available with a smooth or circular-sawn surface.

Does Reclaimed flooring have to be installed a certain way?

After carefully processing reclaimed wood into flooring, it is extremely stable and installs the same as most other solid, hardwood flooring products. Some of our natural surface flooring may require some hand scraping to even a few board edges.

What is a typical lead time for delivery?

Lead time varies depending on product quantity, custom specifications, and specie availability. Solid wide plank flooring with no finish applied typically ships in 3-4 weeks, while prefinished solid wide plank flooring typically ships in 4-5 weeks. For more information, please see our Order Expectations resource.

How will my order be delivered?

Each order is delivered common carrier to your business or job site. All orders are custom packaged on pallets, with lumber wrap and wooden sides/top to protect your order. Forklift unloading is recommended and material is packaged in bunks of 10-30-sq. ft.

Can this flooring be installed over radiant heat, over concrete, or below grade?

If you have a project like the one described above, we recommend looking into our engineered flooring products. Both our Reclaimed and Traditional Plank wide plank flooring can be an engineered product.

Will wider boards cup, crown or warp over time?

Wood acclimation and installation are the two most important things to ensure your floor lasts a lifetime. Our flooring is properly kiln dried to 6-8% moisture content before delivery, which eliminates the tendency for warping or cupping. Whatever type of humidity control that you have should be in proper working condition prior to installation to provide a constant environment for your floor. Acclimation of the product in the area where it will be installed for a minimum of 7 to 10 days is strongly recommended.

How do I place my order?

To place an order, simply call your Design Specialist for details. A 50% deposit will be required at the time your order is placed with the balance due before delivery

What do you recommend to fill unwanted holes?

A filler is recommended to fill holes. Please call for more details.

Are other wood species or custom sizes available?

We are a completely custom mill, and while we specialize in wide plank wood flooring, we can provide any of our materials in shapes and sizes not listed on this site. Please call for custom pricing, availability or antique building materials that may not be listed.

How Do I: Decide On Replacing A Staircase

Now I know this isn’t a weekend project type article, but with more and more of us extending into lofts and cellars to create extra space in our existing homes, rather than moving, the conundrum of what to do with our staircases isn’t as rare as it once was. I’ve written a short article for Real Homes about some of the issues you might face and I hope you find some of the information useful.

It might not be a very sexy article but if it’s stair porn you’re after then you need to get the regs right or a strict Building Control person will be insisting you rip your sexy steps right out. Try Stair Porn or Dezeen for inspiration, it’s where I found the beauties below.

When renovating a property, the location of the staircase is often pretty much fixed, or moving it is cost prohibitive. However if building from scratch, making radical alterations or installing a loft/cellar conversion, a new or moved staircase might be required. The three main things to consider are safety, comfort and design.

Safety and comfort are dictated by building control regulations. There’s no fee or contact  required to replace like for like, however, for everything else, building control approval will be required to ensure the stairs are well designed, safe to climb and navigate, and give a comfortable experience for the user. Google Part K Building Regs, for details.

The most important measurement is the total rise: the finished floor to finished floor vertical distance. This dictates the number of ‘rises’ or verticals, and ‘goings’ or flat steps. The ‘rises’ must all be the same height, between 190mm and a maximum of 220mm. All goings must be a minimum of 220mm. Say your total rise is 2600mm (a fairly standard staircase total), then this divides into 13 steps at 200mm high, so you can see you can have a little play with measurements.

The maximum pitch of a staircase is 42 degrees, compling with a minimum head height of 2m at all points on and off the staircase (slightly less for loft conversions) and landings provided at the top and bottom which are wider than the staircase width.

You need a handrail on one side for stairs less than 1m wide and guarding for anything over two risers. There is no minimum width for domestic staircases, though most are a standard 860mm. Very narrow secondary staircases can be allowed, but must be passed by building control, with their decisions varying from person to person.

If you’re totally baffled by measurements, don’t panic and keep reading, help can be at hand.

Design is next! If your existing staircase blocks the central core of your home in a full back to brick renovation, moving it may totally open up a fantastic ground floor. What you don’t want is to open up downstairs, but dramatically reduce bedroom space upstairs. Good design incorporates practicality at all times.

Consider carefully the age, style and interior design of your property before making decisions. Is it traditional or contemporary? Timber, glass, metal or concrete are all options but not all may be a good design fit. That spiral staircase might be cottage wonderful, but will you get a bed up it? Does an industrial copper clad staircase really fit in a 1930’s semi?

Maybe you’ve seen an amazing staircase in a magazine, then what? Firstly, check your budget. Stunning staircases are often architect designed, fab for a high budget, but cantilevering is only for daydreams if not. An expert staircase company for design and build is an excellent mid-range option. Low to mid-range budgets can be ticked by using your on-site joiner or your own skills with an off-the-shelf purchase online. Some of these companies offer gorgeous DIY options in oak and wrought iron, you just need to be absolutely sure on measurements. Most DIY sheds or timber merchants also sell affordable full staircases ready to be ‘pimped’ by a clever homeowner, maybe with locally made glass panels or reclaimed spindles.

  • Simple or elaborate, pick the style perfect for you & your home, not just what’s fashionable this year.
  • Think about noise levels on bare metal or hollow timber stairs. Sound echoes around quiet houses at night.
  • Specialist balustrading can make the simplest of stairs look amazing – get googling!
  • Don’t forget all-important lighting. In a new staircase, maybe build LED into the design to light up your flight.
  • An off-the-shelf staircase in pine can look amazing with a funky carpet runner and painted on trend deep grey or light enhancing white.
  • Don’t be fooled by those fancy pictures of staircases without handrails, in the UK you need one!

Good luck climbing your way to stairway heaven 🙂 x
