Felco Ergonomic Hand Pruner with 1-inch Cutting ...

As a landscaper I do a lot of pruning, and I've used many different pruners from dollar store types, to the typical well known name brands "pro" models at the big box home supply stores here in Canada. Those aren't much different overall. Some last a month, some last a year. Blades get a little dull over time, no problem I just sharpen them in less than a minute. After 6 months to a year of professional use; the springs lose springiness and fall out all the time. Eventually you lose the spring, so you buy a new pair. Either that or the cheap steal parts start to warp from use.

Given that, I took a look at Felco for pruners to use at home, because you can buy spare parts, like springs and new blades and fix it yourself, without having to ship them the pruners off somewhere. This pair of F8s make all the others feel completely inferior, in terms of cutting performance. The blade is clearly made of high quality metals, allowing it to stay sharp longer. The key to keeping them working well is to clean and oil the blades to kill off the sap from the plants pruned. Those chemicals will rust the blades quickly if you don't. Build quality wise I don't know if they are much different than the $40-50 "pro" pruners you'll find at the home supply stores, but it's hard to quantify the difference. I don't know if I'd use these at work, that's just a personal choice since work pruners get lost too easily. If you've ever worked on a lava rock garden, you'll know that even a red pair can disappear. Anyway, I still use these a lot at home, and they are very good. As long as your hands are strong enough you can cut some thick branches, more so than some of the cheaper pruners I have used that were rated to cut more.
