leaking check valves Author: raybowman (OH) I have a 3/4 HP submersible pump lifting water in an 1 1/4 pipe about 10 feet before connecting to the underground pipe to the public storm system. I recently noticed that after the pump shut off, I could hear the water running back down into the sump. I assumed the check valve (12" from the pump) couldn't handle the weight of
the about 9' lift when it shout off so I installed a second check valve about 4' above the first. It didn't seem to correct the problem. Because of battery back up pump and radon sealed cover, I cannot reposition the oumnp differently. The pump keeps recycling the same water..about every 6-7 minutes.Any suggestions?
A check valve does NOT leak because it "cannot handle the pressure of the water", and if a second one does the same thing, you may be trying to fix the wrong problem.
Correct, the higher the lift, the more pressure forcing the check valve closed.
Maybe it's new water entering the sump and all is working correctly?
Your pump may be sucking sand and rocks and it is getting lodged on the sealing edge of the check valve, preventing a good seal. Is the pump set up on a brick or something to keep it from sucking out dirt?

it is possible that your float has come out of adjustment. when the pump shuts off the water below the check valve will flow back to the sump. if the float is not adjusted properly this could be enough water to start the cycle over again. another issue could be water from an unknown source entering the sump (from ground water or a water leak) either way, opening the sump and physically viewing the situation should lead to a proper resolution.
quote; when the pump shuts off the water below the check valve will flow back to the sump.
That will only happen if the discharge pipe has a 'vent hole" drilled in it which few sump pumps do.

I have a 200A that I fettled up real good to give as a B-day gift. I had it packaged ready to wrap but then realized I left out a funnel. Unpacking and unwrapping it, I noticed then that there seemed to be some moisture in the plastic bag that was over the lantern. I thought that it might have been a leak so I got the lantern out to inspect it. I found that the CV was leaking as it would push up the pump tube when it the stem was open and the hole covered. The lantern bag was dry by the time I went to check it for odor so there was no info to gain there. The lantern also was dry which made me wonder if there was a leak at all. The lantern was on it's side so fuel could have come out of the CV if the pump stem was not closed.
Anyway, the CV leaked intermittently but frequently. I removed it and cleaned it again, but it would not stop leaking. If anything, it got a little worse. I then put in a NOS CV which did the same thing as the original so I took it out and reinstalled the original. It still leaked. I put in another NOS CV and it leaked too. I put EtOH into the pump shaft to confirm that the leakage with every CV was from the center of the valve where it is supposed to be sealed by the ball.
What might the problem be here? Why do 3 CVs all leak instead of sealing this lantern?
