Nice set of useful washers that won't corrode

There are many types of lock washer, and some are integrated with the fastener or the fastener itself may have ribs to grip the surface it is securing. Therefore, it is important to use the correct washer to secure the fastener without damaging the work.I primarily use four types of lock washer as shown (left to right) in the attached picture.1. Split lock washers, also known as spring lock washers .These have an opening where one side rises above the other and compresses while pushing against the mating surfaces. Since the split end &#;bites&#; into the materials, they work best on softer surfaces and do not provide as much resistance to loosening on harder materials. They can also gall the surfaces being attached.2. External tooth washers. These have teeth around their outer diameter to tightly &#;bite&#; into the work surface for greater hold than internal tooth washers. External tooth washers provide a very strong grip due to the angle of the teeth and the larger surface area of the outside diameter.3. Internal tooth lock washers. These absorb shock and vibration to prevent nuts or fasteners from loosening. I often use these for ground wires or other electrical connections as they scrape the work surfaces to improve the electrical connection4. Wave washers are used in plumbing, metalworking, and machinery applications, and compress when the fastener is tightened. While they do not provide as much holding power as the other lock washers mentioned, they evenly distribute the load over the application. I use them to fasten things like rubberized intake manifolds or trim pieces on the motorcycles I service, as they do not damage the parts and can adjust for temperature variations and expansion. For things like exhaust heat shields, I use them along with a thread compound like Loctite as the wave washer dampens vibration and keeps the shield secure without damaging it. Though steel wave washers provide higher tensile strength, the stainless-steel wave washers in this assortment are ideal for things like motorcycles and other outdoor equipment since they provide complete corrosion resistance in wet environments. This stainless-steel wave washer assortment includes the common sizes I use, and I am delighted to have it.
