Stone Grinding VS. Belt, the pros and cons..

I did the stone thing for a while. I had some of the best to use about 10" in diameter at no cost to me but rounded on the ou8tside edge. The word was "the harder the steel the softer the stone to be used should be". It was a way to do it but --- The stone wheel used in the past were often 3' 0r 4' in diameter and were turned by water wheels. The grinders often layed down to do their work. In time it could be done in a sort of smooth manner but with the motor drive not as even as I wanted and I went to a 4" X 36" belt grind to a 6"X 48" and now am at a 2" x 72" with a flat platen and one I most often run a 10" wheel on. The stone wheels were not a practical way for me to get the results I wanted. Frank

Compare to a drill sharpened on a drill sharpener someday under a 10x glass. There is quite a difference.

Can be, yes.

And I suspect that one CAN sharpen a drill on a belt decently. I have done some of the things referred to , and I got the tools to cut. But it is so much easier to do on a wheel.

And at least one or two folks mention using a disk, or the belt with a special platen, pulley, etc. That should work. And the irregularities on a disk are probably not important for the bulk of drilling needs.

Once I noticed that the belt "wrap" was dubbing the edges by an unknown amount, even with a platen if not adjusted perfectly, I decided it wasn't worth going to extra trouble when I can walk over and flip the switch on the wheel type grinder. The grinders (all flavors) make enough mess that they are not near the other machines, so we have to go in there anyway, no matter which type gets used.

Evidently there is a group that do, and a group that do not, as far as sharpening on belts. And among the "do" folks, there are all sorts of special ways to go about it.

Interesting.

No, I am NOT gonna put on a fine belt just to sharpen drills, when I can use the regular grinders already set uo with different types and grits. The belt units have 3 to maybe 100 grit in them and that's about all they need. Great for snagging and de-finning, shaping parts, etc (at least if you don't go pushing sharp edges in too fast....)
