CommentsWhat is quartz sand?
Quartz sand
, also known as
silica
quartz sand, white sand, or industrial sand, is composed of silica and oxygen, the two main elements. Specifically, silica sand is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2).
The most common form of silica is quartz, a chemically inert and relatively hard mineral. Silica has a Mohs hardness rating of 7 out of 10, making it ideal for use as a filter medium and for grinding and sandblasting.
Although quartz is usually white or colorless, it can come in many colors. The color of each placer depends largely on the type of mineral and rock detrital that makes up the resource.
In order to be considered silica sand, the material must contain at least 95 percent silica and less than 0.6 percent iron oxide. If sand does not meet this criterion, it falls under what is commonly referred to as "normal" sand.
What is the difference between silica sand and ordinary sand
?
Common sand, also known as feldspar sand, brown sand, or construction sand, always contains some silica, but only in amounts less than 95 percent. For example, typical brown sand used in concrete applications may contain up to 80% silica, as well as varying amounts of iron, carbonate, potassium and other trace elements/minerals.
These "impurities" make ordinary sand more prone to chemical reactions and are often darker in color than quartz sand. Non-silica (conventional sand) can come in shades of white, pink, green, and black, depending on the geology and the location of the deposits.

What is the use of silica sand?
Silica sand has many different uses in industry and commerce, from golf courses to glassmaking. Quartz sand is a commercial and consumer product used widely in North America.
The use of silica sand depends on physical, chemical and mechanical properties such as particle size, shape, color, structure and distribution, as well as fire resistance, strength and stability. These characteristics can vary according to how the mineral is processed after extraction.
Here are seven common uses for quartz sand:
1. Golf courses and sports fields
Quartz sand
is used in bunkers and greens on golf courses, as well as natural and synthetic playgrounds. When you're 18, you'll find yourself stuck in sand traps that are usually filled with quartz sand. It is also used to maintain greens and fairways because of its ability to support drainage and natural plant growth. In the lawn area, silica sand is used as the main structural component of an uncontaminated filter medium.
2. Industrial abrasives

Silica sand is a kind of mineral abrasive commonly used in industrial sandblasting. While quartz sandblasting produces dangerous dust, exposure can be easily avoided by following recommended PPE(Personal Protective Equipment) guidelines and/or applying a dust control solution to the sand.
3. Water filtration
One of the most common uses for silica sand is water filtration, whether it's to treat well water or filter tap water. Due to its uniform shape and size, silica sand is an effective filter bed that continuously removes contaminants from the water. In addition, it does not degrade when exposed to acidic chemicals.

4. Development of glass manufacturing technology
Silica sand is the main ingredient in glass production. In fact, silicon is the main ingredient in standard glass products, from Windows to beer bottles. The purity of the silica sand used determines the color, strength and transparency of the final product.
5. Paints and coatings
Silica sand is used in paints and coatings to improve the overall appearance and durability of the coatings. Silicone filler improves the color loss and stain resistance of the coating. Due to the oil absorption properties of silicon sand, it gives the coating rich pigment and wear-resistant durability.
6. Ceramics and refractory materials
Silica is an important component of all types of ceramic construction and glazing, including tableware, floor tiles, wall tiles, and more. As the structural pillar of ceramic products, silicon helps to regulate expansion and contraction, ensure proper drying of ceramics, and improve the overall durability of ceramic products.
7. Building materials
Quartz sand (commonly referred to as industrial sand) is a major structural component of many building products. Flooring, mortar, cement, roofing shingles, asphalt, and other industrial materials all use silica to improve durability and structural integrity. Because of its resistance to weather, wear and corrosion, silica is often used as a filler or sealant.
Quartz sand has a variety of uses in daily life, involving a number of industries.

What's the difference between sand and quartz? Is quartz more crystalline form of sand? Do they have the same composition or my be not? or my be the two words is similar? Do they contain more than silica? Thanks.
