quartz sand, white sand, or industrial sand, is composed of silica and oxygen, the two main elements. Specifically, silica sand is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2).

The most common form of silica is quartz, a chemically inert and relatively hard mineral. Silica has a Mohs hardness rating of 7 out of 10, making it ideal for use as a filter medium and for grinding and sandblasting.

Although quartz is usually white or colorless, it can come in many colors. The color of each placer depends largely on the type of mineral and rock detrital that makes up the resource.

In order to be considered silica sand, the material must contain at least 95 percent silica and less than 0.6 percent iron oxide. If sand does not meet this criterion, it falls under what is commonly referred to as "normal" sand.

Common sand, also known as feldspar sand, brown sand, or construction sand, always contains some silica, but only in amounts less than 95 percent. For example, typical brown sand used in concrete applications may contain up to 80% silica, as well as varying amounts of iron, carbonate, potassium and other trace elements/minerals.

These "impurities" make ordinary sand more prone to chemical reactions and are often darker in color than quartz sand. Non-silica (conventional sand) can come in shades of white, pink, green, and black, depending on the geology and the location of the deposits.
