Don't Get Burnt When Selecting a Sintering Furnace

Unfortunately, there is little information available on sintering zirconia. It seems as though most lab owners are highly focused on the specifics of a new scanner or mill and then buy a random sintering furnace without the same in-depth knowledge they obtained when buying the other pieces of equipment. Interestingly, the sintering process is as important as both the mill and the scanner. When I walked the floor at LMT Chicago this year there were more than a dozen different sintering furnaces to choose from. The price range was huge, from $3,500 to $18,000. With this wide range in price it’s obvious there must be some significant differences. By de-emphasizing the value of a quality sintering furnace you may be compromising the esthetics and strength of your zirconia restoration.

When looking for a sintering furnace we believe the following to be either critical or very important components and design features for sintering furnaces:

    1. Bottom Entry Only. Many years ago we had porcelain furnaces with front entry. How often do we see this now? Never! Why? The heating chamber is colder close to the door, hotter in the rear of the chamber. This was found to be problematic for firing porcelain and it’s not good for sintering zirconia either. Bottom entry sintering furnaces have heating elements evenly distributed around the heating chamber. This provides a much more even heat distribution throughout the muffle and a more consistent firing temp of all units.

    2. Heating elements are another big consideration. Generally speaking, this is the primary point of failure for most sintering furnaces. There are no materials fired in a dental lab that require as much heat as zirconia sintering. Most zirconia materials fire at a high temp of 1500°-1550°C with a hold at the top temp for two hours or more. That’s a lot of heat. Sintering furnace heating elements are generally made from one of two different materials, Silicon Carbide (SiC) or Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2). More commonly used SiC elements are less costly and last six months to a year when used daily. The SiC elements are built to fire at a maximum temp of 1600°C. When firing at 1550° in a furnace with a top temp heating element of 1600°C you are heating the furnace to the max on every firing cycle. This results in a shorter life expectancy as you are pushing the furnace to the limit on every firing. SiC heating element failure is costly in replacement parts, labor, and is a potential loss of work in the furnace when the elements fail. In addition, unless you maintain a spare set, you may be down for several days. If this is your only sintering furnace your entire production is shut down. The SiC elements are often found in the more economical furnaces.

      The second type of elements, MoSi2 have been designed to withstand and fire up to 1800°C. We have been using these heating elements for several years and have found they are lasting for more than three years while putting them through a cycle 6-8 times a week. When firing at 1550° in a furnace that is rated at 1800° we are well within the upper limits. This scenario translates to running the furnace well within the upper limits of the firing temp. Keep in mind, building a sintering furnace becomes incrementally more expensive with every 50-100 degrees added to the maximum firing temp. As a result, you will pay more for a furnace rated for 1800° with MoSi2 heating elements but in the long run it will likely cost the same while providing stress free sintering for years to come.

    3. Capacity is another important factor. Zirconia is the single most growing restoration in dental labs. If you’re just becoming involved in zirconia production, odds are your volume will increase and so will your sintering capacity needs. Sintering furnaces have limits to the number of trays that fit in a single cycle. Some fit only one, others up to 3. There are also problems with overloading a try with too many restorations. The crowns need some space for optimal results. Overloading trays can result in compromised esthetic results. Buy a furnace with capacity for growth. If you are filling your current furnace to the max, it may be time to add a second one.

    4. Programs. Most zirconia materials require at least two ramp rates. It’s important to have the ability to program a furnace in accordance to manufacturers recommendations. In addition, we have come to an age where we really should be using more than one material. For instance, we believe you should use a higher strength zirconia for long span frameworks another for full contour, and Sagemax Nexxzr S for zirconia custom abutments. This material has a flexural strength of 1550 MPa (most of our existing zirconia materials today are 800-1100 MPa). To my knowledge, this is the strongest dental zirconia on the market. Sagemax Nexxzr S is the material of choice for both hybrid and full zirconia custom abutments. This would also be the material of choice for frameworks with connectors that are minimal in size. The ability to have multiple programs and multiple firing stages has become a must.

The sintering furnace must be installed in the dry room,and it must be put at least 25cm away from the wall. A. Take out the sintering furnace core from the accessories for standby(it must be placed in a safe place); B. Insert the output plug of the power unit into the sintering furnace and the input plug of the power unit into the external plug. (for 220 V instruments only); C. Turn on the power switch of power unit,then turn on the power switch of sintering furnace. D. When the sintering furnace starts and display the main interface(when the temperature is displayed), press the down button, and the sintering platform moves downward (do not place any obstacles on the track of the sintering platform ); E.Assemble the baking core on the sintering platform. The output voltage can be controlled to reduce the driving voltage. Effectively prolong the service life of silicon carbide rod. The lower voltage is used to drive the silicon carbide rod to reduce the heat load so the service life of the silicon carbide rod is greatly prolonged. Power unit must be placed in a well ventilated and dry place. Attention:Never start up the device without baking core!
