How to save Money on Overhead Crane and Hoist ...

How to save Money on Overhead Crane and Hoist Pendant Repairs

The most replaced or repaired part on an overhead crane is the pendant. The simple reason for the frequent repairs is because the pendant is the control unit for the crane or hoist. This is the part of the crane that is most frequently handled and can easily become damaged by regular wear or abuse.

Overhead cranes and hoists will always outlast the lifespan of their pendant controls. Because of this you will find a mix of OEM (original equipment) and third party replacement pendants on cranes. It is not uncommon to see three different brands of pendants all attached to the same model CM Lodestar hoist in one factory. Because of this variation it is important to provide either the exact part number of the assembly or part from the hoist service manual. Or you can provide answers to the following questions.

How many motions do you need to control? One motion for up-down directions on a solo hoist? Two for a monorail to control trolley and hoist? Or do you have three motions as is common for overhead cranes with bridge, trolley and hoist motorization?

How many speeds do you need? Single speed and two speed are the most common options.

What type of start-stop circuit do you need? The two most common types are maintained start-stop and momentary start-stop.

Is your crane equipped with an E-stop? If it is you will want to have a pendant with an emergency stop button.

To help us identify the correct pendant for your crane we will need to know the following details: Manufacturer of the crane and hoist, model of hoist and serial number of hoist. It is also helpful to provide a photo of the front and back of your existing pendant to help identify the existing model and any special features.

Another important question is the length of the pendant. Most new hoists and cranes ship with a pendant length that is equal to the height of lift less four feet. A properly sized crane pendant will hang 4 feet from the floor for optimal ergonomics. Be certain to not have a pendant that is too long. This can result in both damage to the pendant from dropping and striking the ground and cause a tripping hazard. Also consider the environment in which the crane pendant will is used. If you are frequently ruining or replacing a hoist pendant, it may be cost effective to upgrade to a more durable option. Most pendants are designed for indoor use and are resistant to light dust, oil and some moisture. If you are using your crane outdoors, in a high dust environment, wet environment or high heat area, be sure to notify your sales rep. One of the most common pendant control problems we encounter comes from crane operators pulling the load with the pendant on a push trolley type crane. The hoist is designed to be moved or positioned by moving either the chain or the load on a push type crane or trolley. Pulling a load with the hoist pendant results in strained and broken control wires and loose connections.

Overhead Hoist & Lift System Buying Tips

Of all the considerations when buying a hoist, cost is certainly a factor. But cutting corners to save a few bucks can come back to haunt you. Avoid these key mistakes to get the best lifting equipment for your money.

    1. Purchasing a hoist that&#;s too slow for the operation. A slower speed means lower horsepower and a cheaper price. This might look good on paper but look out for complaints from operators. The slower speed means it takes longer to do their job. Avoid this issue by checking the speed of the unit you&#;re replacing (for example, 14 feet per minute, 20 feet per minute, etc.). Or, when in doubt, ask the operator!

    2. Buying a push trolley when a powered trolley is needed. When purchasing a trolley, here&#;s a general guideline: If an operator can safely push on the load at all times, then a push trolley will be fine. However, if the load is dangerous to handle, if there&#;s an opening in the floor, or if the operator needs to stand away from the load, then a motor-driven trolley is required.

    3. Buying a manual hoist for a long lift application. Manual hoists, units that lift and lower the load when the operator pulls the hand chain, are designed for relatively short heights. Any lift more than 20 feet really needs to be made by a powered hoist.

    4. Purchasing a custom hoist with a finish unsuited for the environment. Hoists made standard by most manufacturers are finished with paint suitable for indoor use. If you need hoisting equipment for use outdoors or in an area where harsh chemicals are present, a special finish (for example &#; primer, finish coat, and/or urethane topcoat) is well worth the extra cost for longer lasting equipment. No matter what, never purchase a custom hoist without any finish. Declining the paint charge might seem like a savings, but the unit will likely be rusted before it hits your factory floor.

    5. Purchasing a standard electric hoist for a hazardous location. Hazardous locations are defined by the National Electric Code by Class, Group, and Division. Electric hoists and trolleys must be specially configured for the requirements of the particular application. Using a standard hoist in a hazardous location could cause a catastrophic accident.     6. Buying a single reeved hoist when true vertical lift is required. If you need the hoist to place an object precisely in one spot, then you need true vertical lift and double reeved wire rope hoist. Single reeved wire rope hoists are adequate for any application that doesn&#;t mind &#;hook drift&#; &#; or, when the wire rope cable moves on and off the drum during the course of raising and lower the hook.

    7. Purchasing a standard duty unit for a heavy-duty cycle and trying to compensate with a higher capacity. Let&#;s say you have a 5-ton application where the hoist unit is used multiple times a day. It&#;s often rationalized that a 10-ton capacity hoist will be able to do the job since it can lift twice the load. However, this isn&#;t the case. To accommodate a high duty cycle, upgrade the hoist motor, the hoist brake and the controls. Specify heat treated sheaves and trolley wheels. Upgrades on a 5-ton capacity hoist will extend the operating life of the unit and save money overall.
