However, in the case of steel, the situation was different. Cast cannons are stronger than cannons welded up by strips, and until the 19th century, people had difficulty in casting a cannon out of steel. When Krupp's and others learned to cast steel cannons, they became a lot more popular and basically replaced bronze and iron.

While bronze was the material of choice on land, cast iron cannons were popular on ships because they were a lot cheaper than bronze. Weight wasn't as big an issue apparently on ship as on land.



(I read somewhere that Charles of Sweden apparently tried steel cannons in the 17th century, but the steel cannons got too hot, perhaps because they had less mass because they weren't cast? Anyways, I can't find where I read it, and maybe it is just my faulty memory)
