Making Positive Changes in the Packaging Industry

22 November was marked The Day of Eight Billion by the United Nations. That fateful day was chosen as the approximate time when the global population hit a record of eight billion people. It took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, and it will take about 15 years, until , for it to reach 9 billion. These figures mean that our current food systems are being tested. Recent global events have highlighted the fragility of our food industry supply chains. The packaging sector of the food industry can make a significant impact on sustainability by adopting and implementing various strategies and practices. For manufacturers, this can be achieved through the adoption of high-quality packaging that can deliver safe and nutritious food while reducing the impact on the planet&#;s finite natural resources.

The world is producing twice as much plastic waste as two decades ago, with the bulk of it ending up in landfills or spilling into the environment. Only 9% of plastic waste is successfully recycled according to a OECD report. As the world population is growing, the demand for plastic packaging will only increase. This means the plastic waste problem will only intensify in the years to come. The world&#;s plastic production is expected to double by . This could lead to a doubling of plastic waste and a tripling of plastic leakage to the ocean by (The Pew Charitable Trusts, ).

But we can make a change. At ProPak Vietnam, we can explore how positive changes can be made in the packaging industry. Increased consumer awareness, higher demand for sustainable packaging solutions, newly established policies around the globe, and a growing number of large Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies are committing to sustainability. This requires technical innovation and an increased utilisation of new renewable resources.

ProPak Vietnam can be the platform of exploration. It is an international melting pot where industry players explore how to drive circular developments in the processing and packaging industry in Vietnam. Participants will have the opportunity to experience full-scale machinery in action, examine materials and equipment up close, learn about technologies, discover innovative ideas, and nurture relationships with industry experts.

With an exhibition area spanning up to 10,000 square metres, ProPak Vietnam is set to welcome at least 450 exhibitors from more than 30 countries around the world. Most of the exhibitors hail from thriving economic regions in the United States, Europe and Asia.

There will be a wide range of sectors for exploration. They include packaging, processing, materials, drink technology, pharmaceutical technology, cold chain logistics and warehousing, printing and labelling, as well as laboratory and testing equipment.

ProPak Vietnam will also be hosting a series of seminars, conferences, and technical sessions on practical topics within the processing and packaging sectors. These encompass cutting-edge smart packaging technologies, recent regulations concerning manufacturers&#; extended responsibilities under our nation&#;s Environmental Protection Law, and other solutions to enhance production efficiency and minimise environmental impact.

On a related note, Informa Markets is collaborating with The Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication to organise a pre-show seminar:
