forging is the obvious first thought.The customer reckons the new ones he buys have the points formed by sawing,he says you can tell by the finish on them.
A machine tool dealer has said he can supply him with a horizontal bandsaw to recut the points while still in the hardened condition.I have advised him not to part with any money until he has seen it happening.
I was wondering grinding to refurbish them as it would take the heat treat out the equation.From what I`ve read over the last few years,grinding is not about a few thou anymore.There was an article in a grinding mag I get where Holroyd,a British specialist machine builder had built a grinder that was grinding some parts out of solid bar quicker than a twin spindle cnc lathe could turn them.This machine was actually in production doing the parts,not a development job,very impressive.
Another thought I`ve had is wiring them,would be slow and expensive,but, a new 6" x 48" steel costs $2,000 here so possibly an option.
