In the logistics and packaging industries, the need for effective and efficient packaging solutions is paramount. One crucial piece of equipment in these sectors is the stretch wrapper machine, which plays a vital role in securing palletized loads for transportation and storage. This blog explores the key benefits of stretch wrapper machines and how they work.

What is a stretch wrapper machine?

A stretch wrapper machine, often simply referred to as a stretch wrapper or pallet wrapper, is a type of packaging equipment designed to apply stretch film to palletized loads. This process, known as stretch wrapping, secures and stabilizes the load, protecting it from shifting, damage, dust, and moisture during transportation and storage.

Stretch wrappers come in various designs, ranging from semi-automatic to fully automatic, and can handle a wide range of load sizes and shapes. They are commonly used in warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing facilities to prepare goods for shipping.

How does a stretch wrapper machine work?

Stretch wrapper machines operate based on a simple but effective principle: wrapping a stretch film around a palletized load to create a secure and stable package. Here's a summary of how they operate:

1. Load Placement

The first step in the stretch wrapping process is placing the palletized load on the turntable or platform of the stretch wrapper machine. In some machines, the load may be lifted using a forklift or pallet jack, while others are designed with ramps for easy access.

2. Film Application

Once the load is in position, the stretch film is attached to the pallet or the bottom of the load. The film is made of a flexible, elastic material that can stretch and retract, creating tension that holds the load securely.

3. Wrapping Process

The machine's turntable begins to rotate, allowing the film to wrap around the load. The film is typically applied in an overlapping spiral pattern, starting from the bottom and moving upward. The number of revolutions and the film's tension can be adjusted to meet specific load requirements.

4. Film Cutting and Sealing

After the wrapping process is complete, the stretch wrapper machine cuts and seals the film. The cutting mechanism can be a hot wire, a hot knife, or a clamp-and-cut system. The seal ensures that the film remains secure during handling and transportation.

5. Load Removal

Once the wrapping process is finished, the palletized load is removed from the stretch wrapper machine, ready for storage or shipping.

Benefits of Using a Stretch Wrapper Machine

Stretch wrapper machines offer a range of benefits that make them indispensable in modern packaging and logistics.

1. Improved Load Stability

The fact that stretch wrapping greatly increases load stability is one of its main advantages. Stretch film creates tension that prevents the load from shifting or toppling while being transported. This stability is crucial for preventing damage to goods and ensuring safe handling.

2. Enhanced Protection

Stretch wrapping provides an external barrier that shields against dust, moisture, and other environmental factors. This added layer of protection helps preserve the quality and integrity of the packaged goods, reducing the risk of spoilage or contamination.

3. Cost-Effective Packaging

Stretch wrapping is a cost-effective packaging solution. The stretch film is relatively inexpensive, and the machines are designed for efficiency, reducing waste and labor costs. Additionally, the improved load stability and protection contribute to reduced product damage and returns, leading to cost savings in the long run.

4. Increased Efficiency and Productivity

Using stretch wrapper machines can significantly increase efficiency and productivity in a warehouse or manufacturing setting. Automated and semi-automatic machines can wrap loads quickly, reducing the time and labor required for manual wrapping. This efficiency allows businesses to meet tight deadlines and handle larger volumes of goods.

5. Versatility and Customization

Stretch wrapper machines are versatile and can be customized to suit different load sizes and shapes. Adjustable settings for film tension, wrapping speed, and pattern make it possible to tailor the wrapping process to specific requirements. This versatility ensures that the machine can handle a wide range of packaging needs.

6. Enhanced Safety

Automated stretch wrapper machines reduce the risk of workplace injuries associated with manual wrapping. By automating the wrapping process, businesses can create a safer work environment, reducing the risk of repetitive strain injuries and other accidents.

Conclusion

Stretch wrapper machines are a crucial component of the packaging and logistics industries, offering a range of benefits, including improved load stability, enhanced protection, cost-effective packaging, increased efficiency, versatility, and enhanced safety. By automating the wrapping process, these machines help businesses streamline their operations, reduce costs, and improve the quality of their packaging. As the demand for efficient and reliable packaging solutions continues to grow, stretch wrapper machines will remain a vital tool for businesses seeking to stay competitive in the market.

Pallet Wrapping Machines

A pallet stretch wrapping machine is used to apply polyethylene&#; film around a pallet of goods in order to help secure the load and provide support for the products so that they do not tip, spill or become damaged during transportation or storage. This containment is vital in warehouse and distribution environments for safety purposes and for the ease of movement of goods from one place to another.

Turntable Pallet Wrappers

A turntable wrapper is often a cost-effective solution to typical pallet wrapping applications. With this type of machine, the pallet is placed on a turntable, which revolves whilst a roll of stretch film is carried up and down a tower on a film carriage and applied to the load in a cross-spiral pattern.

This pattern maximises holding power while minimising film use. These pallet wrapping machines are extremely quick and may wrap an entire pallet in
moments.

Turntable machines are available in either a low profile or high profile configuration, with friction brake or power pre-stretch technology:

Low Profile: Has a turntable that is very low to the ground, usually only a few centimetres high. The load is rolled up a ramp to the turntable. Ideal in situations where pallets are primarily loaded by pallet jack. Low profile machines can also be set into a pit in the floor to provide floor level access to the turntable without the need for a ramp.

High Profile: Has a raised turntable, usually 25 centimetres or more off the floor. Designed for loads delivered by forklift. The added height, above the forklift wheels, helps protect the equipment from damage due to forklifts rolling over the turntable. The high profile machine can be interfaced with a pallet conveyor line to feed pallets directly on to the turntable

Friction Brake: The film is pulled through rollers by the weight of the pallet rotating on the turntable. The brake on the machine creates resistance and enables the film to stretch between the roll and the load. The brake can be mechanical, electronic, pneumatic or hydraulic. This technique is used for stable pallets. Machines with friction brake technology can also work with pre-stretched films that have higher load retention capacity.

Power Pre-stretch: The film passes through a series of powered rollers that pre-stretches the film before it is applied. As a result, less force is applied while wrapping a load, making this technology suitable for fragile items. The film tends to regain its original tension after wrapping and this gives a secure hold on the pallet.

Rotary Arm Pallet Wrappers

Rotary arm pallet wrappers are used in high-volume applications where pallets must be wrapped at a high rate.

Instead of a revolving turntable, these machines feature an arm that applies film by rotating around a stationary pallet on the floor. This type of machine is effective for loads that are either very heavy, light and unstable or irregularly shaped.

Manual Pallet Wrappers

Require an operator to be present and active during the entire wrapping process. The operator attaches the film to the pallet, activates the powered turntable and manually moves the counterbalanced film dispensing carriage up and down to cover the entire pallet load with stretch film. The film is then cut by hand.

Semi-Automatic Pallet Wrappers

Require the operator to attach the film to the pallet and press a button. The pallet is automatically wrapped to preset specifications. Most machines have adjustable settings for wrap up or wrap down, number of top and bottom wraps, reinforced area wrap, vertical carriage speed and turntable speed. The operator is able to perform other tasks while the pallet is wrapping and returns to cut the film once done.

Fully Automatic Pallet Wrappers

Designed to wrap pallets without an operator present. This is usually accomplished in two ways. The wrapping cycle can be activated with a pull cord or remote control from the forklift driver or pallet jack operator. Or, the machine can be fully integrated into a run of pallet conveyor to feed pallets, wrap them and discharge them automatically.

The machine is equipped with a film clamp and automatic cut-off mechanism. The clamp holds the film at the base of the pallet, releasing after the wrapping process begins. Then, when the wrapping process is complete, the clamp grabs the film and the film is cut.
