What Should You Know Before Choosing A Scissor Lift ...

Scissor Lift Tables are an incredibly versatile tool that can serve in many applications. If you are considering investing in one, it&#;s worthwhile to look at how this powerful tool can benefit you! So, what is a scissor lift table? Well, you can use it to reach materials or objects at a height or lifting loads and heavy goods. It can help protect your back during the safe movement of bulky or heavy items. With a scissor lift, the entire lifting mechanism is contained beneath the lift platform or table, providing lifting capability with a minimal footprint.

A scissor lifts power comes from hydraulic cylinders. This provides abundant force to raise the load on the platform. The &#;scissors&#; are crossing struts with hinge pins in the middle and at the ends. These provide stability for the platform during lifting and lowering process. Shafts between the struts keep the two sets of scissors separated at a fixed distance, preventing sideways collapse. Depending on the lifting height, a single pair of scissors may be used or multiple pairs that are stacked one above the other.

Selecting a Scissor Lift Table

More than anything, hydraulic scissor lifts are selected based on their intended use. This use will determine the capacity and style of the lift, along with the quality level required and any optional features which might be needed.

Before shopping for a scissor lift table, it is important to fully examine and analyze the intended use for it. In this process, a list of minimum specifications should be developed, which will be used in the process of qualifying or eliminating contenders from the selection process. Call one of our sales team at MORN and we can help you decide which scissor lift is the best option for you.

Some of the characteristics which must be considered include:

Mobility

Decide whether the scissor lift is going to be used in a fixed location, such as to hold up an assembly on a production line, or if it needs to be mobile, such as for maintenance or construction.

Load Capacity

Decide how much weight the stationary scissor lift will need to handle. The limiting factor is usually the size of the hydraulic cylinders. The struts will be designed with a safety factor (to carry more weight than the hydraulics can lift).

Lifting Height

Figure the maximum height to which a load will need to be lifted. Lifts can be used to raise a load to only a portion of this height, without problem.

Folded Height

Figure out how tall the lift is in its folded state. When buying a lift for maintenance, it may need to be able to fit through a doorway. When used as a means of raising workpiece on an assembly line, the folded height must accommodate easy loading of the parts to be worked on.

Platform Size

Your workshop space and load size can help you decide which size of platform suits your lifting work. At MORN, we are skilled at customizing different platform sizes for each user.

Determining the Quality of a Scissor Lift

Whenever working with a cargo scissor lift, safety is a major concern. This is an important consideration when choosing a scissor lift. The quality of the material and workmanship in the lift will determine its safety.

The Ultimate Scissor Lift Dimensions, Sizes, and Specifications Guide

Updated: July 23,

When it comes to reaching elevated areas in construction or the trades, there are two common types of ariel work platforms (AWPs): scissor lifts and boom lifts. The primary difference between scissor lifts and boom lifts is that scissor lifts can only extend vertically while boom lifts can extend both horizontally and vertically, and they can reach further than a scissor lift. Both types of construction lifts have their purpose and function.

In this blog, we'll be focusing on the specifications, dimensions, and sizes of scissor lifts so that contractors feel they are renting or buying the best scissor lift model for their needs. This includes highlighting important machine specs like working height, width, length, platform capacity, and engine type. If you're looking for information on boom lifts, you can refer to our articulating boom lift dimensions and size guide or our telescopic boom lift dimensions and size guide.

We've highlighted several scissor lift brands in this guide including Genie, Haulotte, Hy-Brid Lifts, JLG, MEC, Pettibone, Skyjack, Snorkel, and XCMG. You can use the table of contents below to navigate to each brand. We've also categorized the scissor lift models by size so you can compare them across the different brands.

Scissor Lift Dimensions, Sizes, and Specs by Brand

Genie offers a wide range of outdoor and indoor scissor lifts suitable for the construction industry.  Known for their mobility, they have several models with small footprints that are made for narrower sites with their limited width. Their scissor lifts have platform heights ranging between 14' 1'' and 53' and platform capacities ranging from 500 to 2,500 pounds making them suitable for a wide range of heavy-duty construction projects.

As for naming, the GR series is their vertical mast lifts which are narrower models, often suited for only one person and engineered for tight spaces. Any model with "RT" in the name is the rough terrain model which is suitable for outdoor projects and rougher terrains. Models like the "Genie AWP-20S" are push-around models that are designed to be lighter weight and more energy efficient, and "E-drive" models have AC drives while any "DC" models have direct current drives.

Lastly, the numbers in the model often correlate to two specifications with the first two representing the machine's platform height and the last two illustrating the machine's width. For example, The Genie GS- has a platform height of 19 feet and a width of 32 inches.

MEC offers a wide variety of slab and rough terrain scissor lifts. Their slab lifts are further sorted into micro, compact, and slim models and refer to the machine's dimensions, often narrower and shorter models, making them great for small spaces as their footprints are relatively small. The smallest model, the SE, is only 31.5'' wide and 57'' long. MEC follows the same naming convention as other brands with the first two numbers denoting the platform height and the last two resembling the width of the machine.

These models also exert less pressure on the surfaces they're sitting on. The SE only exerts 229 lbs of uniform force and 112 lbs of maximum localized pressure. So, MEC's smaller models are great for sensitive surface operation. As for their rough terrain scissor lifts, MEC has both electric and diesel models, making them great for either indoor or outdoor tough environments. MEC has one of the highest-reaching scissor lifts, the MEC RT, extending 60' tall.

For their names, "XD" refers to the machine having an extra deck, "RT" and "ERT" are their rough terrain and electric rough terrain models, respectively, and "AC" models have AC electric drives. Similar to JLG, "AE" denotes the machine being all-electric, the "RJ" models have a rotation and jib for extended reach and maneuverability, and "MME" is the vertical mast lift line or products. The "slim", "nano", and "micro" in the model names refer to them being narrower models designed for tighter spaces.

Fast Heavy Industry contains other products and information you need, so please check it out.

As for the naming convention, they are similar to other brands except for a slight change. Instead, the first two numbers resemble width while the last two numbers denote the lift height, doing an inverse of brands like Genie, JLG, Pettibone, and others. So the SRT-HC, for example, has a width of 90" and a lift height of 31'.

As for what the letters represent, the "RTE", "RT", and "BE" series represent the electric rough terrain, rough terrain, and bi-energy rough terrain models, respectively. The bi-energy machines can run on either electric battery or diesel, making them one of. the few hybrid options on the market. The "HC" in the name refers to whether they're high-capacity machines or not, capable of lifting more weight. Lastly, the "P" in the name signifies that the machine is a push-around model while the "MINI" resembles the fact that the machines have a narrower and often shorter footprint, made for smaller work areas.

The Most Important Scissor Lift Specs

While many other factors play into picking the best scissor lift for a job including gradeability, tire type, speed, and more, we've highlighted the specs that contractors find matter the most when looking for a machine.

Platform Height

Platform height is crucial when choosing to rent or buy a scissor lift because it determines the maximum working height you can safely reach. Ensuring the platform height matches the job requirements helps avoid safety hazards and ensures efficiency by allowing workers to access necessary areas without additional equipment. This means it's also important for contractors to know the height requirements of the job before looking for a machine.

Working Height

The working height of a scissor lift is the maximum height at which a worker can safely perform tasks while standing on the platform, typically calculated as the platform height plus six feet. It matters because it ensures that the lift can reach the necessary heights for various tasks, providing safety and efficiency in accessing elevated work areas.

Machine Width

Machine width is important because it affects the scissor lift's ability to navigate through tight spaces, doorways, and aisles. Knowing the width ensures that the lift can be safely and efficiently maneuvered in the work environment without causing damage or becoming obstructed. Many of the slimmer or micro models are capable of fitting through standard doorways. The wider models typically need to enter through truck ports or industrial doors to fit inside.

Machine Length

Machine length is important because it affects the maneuverability and storage of the scissor lift. Knowing the length helps ensure that the lift can be operated in confined spaces, transported easily, and stored without taking up excessive room or causing logistical issues on the worksite.

Platform Capacity

Platform capacity is critical because it determines the maximum weight the scissor lift can safely support, including workers, tools, and materials. Ensuring the platform capacity meets the requirements of the job helps prevent overloading, which can lead to accidents, equipment damage, and safety violations.

Engine Type

The type of engine is important to know because it affects the scissor lift's performance, environmental impact, and suitability for different work environments. Electric engines are ideal for indoor use due to their quiet operation and lack of emissions, while diesel or gas engines provide more power and are better suited for outdoor, rugged terrains where higher performance and longer run times are needed.

The Most Common Scissor Lift Sizes

The most common scissor lift sizes range from small, compact models to larger, high-reaching units. Compact scissor lifts, often with platform heights of 10 to 19 feet, are ideal for indoor use in tight spaces such as warehouses and retail stores. Mid-sized lifts, with platform heights of around 20 to 32 feet, are versatile and can be used both indoors and outdoors for a variety of maintenance, installation, and construction tasks.

Larger scissor lifts, with platform heights extending up to 40 to 70 feet, are typically used for outdoor construction projects, where greater elevation is needed. These larger models often have higher platform capacities and are equipped with rough terrain features for enhanced stability and performance on uneven surfaces. Choosing the right size depends on the specific height and capacity requirements of the job.

The Different Scissor Lift Types

Scissor lifts come in various types to suit different work environments and needs. Electric scissor lifts are commonly used for indoor applications due to their quiet operation and zero emissions, making them ideal for tasks in warehouses, factories, and retail spaces. They typically have non-marking tires to protect floors and compact designs to navigate through tight spaces.

On the other hand, rough terrain scissor lifts are designed for outdoor use on uneven or rugged surfaces. They are equipped with larger, robust tires, higher ground clearance, and powerful diesel or gas engines to handle challenging conditions and provide stability on construction sites, fields, and other demanding environments.

Additionally, there are hybrid scissor lifts that combine electric and diesel power sources, offering the flexibility to operate efficiently both indoors and outdoors. These hybrids are particularly useful for projects that span different types of terrain and require versatile equipment.

Another type is the narrow scissor lift, which is specifically designed for use in narrow aisles and confined spaces, commonly found in warehouses and storage facilities. Each type of scissor lift is tailored to meet specific operational requirements, ensuring safety, efficiency, and productivity in various applications.

How High Can a Scissor Lift Go?

The height of a scissor lift is dependent on its platform height. Scissor lifts can go anywhere between 19' tall to 70' tall with the Snorkel SRT-HC being the highest-reaching scissor lift at 70 feet.

How Much Does a Scissor Lift Weigh?

The weight of a scissor lift varies depending on its size and type, typically ranging from 2,000 to 20,000 pounds. Smaller, electric models used for indoor tasks can weigh around 2,000 to 5,000 pounds, while larger, rough terrain models designed for outdoor use can weigh 10,000 pounds or more. The weight is an important consideration for transportation, storage, and ensuring the lift's stability during operation.
