The two-stage upper/lower air end design features a first stage compression at the top, interstage cooling between the compression chambers, and a second stage compression at the bottom.

The over/under design takes advantage of "interstage" cooling by injecting a "screen" of lubricant/coolant to improve overall efficiency.
